Nancy’s
Dogs
Scud: ADCh,
Mach
January 25, 1991 to September 19, 2003
Her
first agility dog was Scud, a male Border Collie that died on
September 19, 2003 at close to 13 years of age. Scud was diagnosed
with lymphoma April of 1999, but went on to continue his career
in agility while undergoing years of chemotherapy. Nancy and
ADCh, MACh, Scud, CDX, represented the United States on four
AKC World Agility Championship teams, in 1996, '97, '98, and
'99. In 1999 in Dortmund, Germany, Scud and Nancy placed sixth
in the World. They also have a long record of superior performances
at the USDAA National Championships, winning many first place
trophies in the Nationals Classes over 8 years of Grand Prix
competitions. Scud is the 1998 Grand Prix National 30-inch Champion,
the 2001 USDAA 22 inch World Champion Veteran, and he placed
second in 1995 and 1997. They were a member of the winning DAM
National team in 1997, and won the Steeplechase National in 1998.
Nancy
has continued her successful Grand Prix career with her other
border collies.
Riot: ADCh,
MACh3, USDAA LAA Platinum
08/09/1995
She
is the 1999, USDAA National Grand Prix 24-inch Champion, and
she placed second in the USDAA Nationals in 1998. On September
23rd, 2001, Riot became the 2001 USDAA World Champion at 22 inches.
Riot represented the AKC at the World Championships in 2001 and
2002. Riot placed 2nd in the Individual Agility class in 2001,
and was 1st in the Agility Class in Dortmund Germany in 2002!
Riot is the AKC National Champion 24 inch class for both 2001
and 2002. Riot also won the International overall Championship
at the AKC Nationals in 2002. She followed that up by winning
the AKC World Team Invitational Show in May 2003. Unbeknownst
to Nancy, Riot was actually running with a strained psoas (groin)
muscle at that show, and less than a week later it became evident
she had an injury. Riot won a place on the AKC 2003 World Team
with the win at the Invitational, but because of the injury she
was unable to attend the World Competition. Riot missed both
the USDAA and AKC finals for 2003, but returned to competition
January 2004. Riot won the USDAA Performance National Championship
in 2005, and the Veterans Championship in 2006.
Wicked: ADCh,
MACh3, USDAA LAA Platinum
02/04/1997
Wicked
is the 2000 USDAA World Champion, and a finalist in 2001. She
is the winner of the 26 inch Steeplechase at USDAA 2001 World
championships. Wicked has also been a finalist at the AKC Nationals
3 times. Wicked placed 3rd at the AKC Nationals in 2004
at 20 inches, as well as being on the winning USDAA National/World
Championship DAM Team with Jim Basic and Spy and Ann Croft and
Trigger in 2004. Wicked was 3rd in the Performance GP in 2006
handled by Jim Basic, Nancy’s husband
Panic: MX,
MXJ, ADCh
11/17/2000 (Border Collie)
Panic
has won multiple Grand Prix and Steeplechase qualifiers in
his 4 years of competition. He also placed 2nd in 2004 and
3rd in 2005, and 2nd again in 2006 at the USDAA Nationals in
the Steeplechase finals
Ace: ADCh,
AX, AXJ (Registered name Mace)
10/21/2003 (Border Collie)
Ace
is Nancy’s youngest competing border collie. He started
his career after just a couple months of competition with a Steeplechase
win in February 2006, in Turlock, California. In July 2007 Ace
won the NW Regional Grand Prix and he will be competing in the
GP finals in Scottsdale November 2007
Jack
02/25/04 Sheltie
Jack
is Nancy’s youngest dog. He began competition in 2006, but
only was shown a few times before being laid off with an
injury. He returned to competition August of 2007.

Jim
Basic
Jim
became involved in agility in 1992 when he began training his
young Border Collie, Mick. After starting agility with the Boeing
Dog and Gun Club, Jim joined Rainier Agility Team in 1993, where
he instructed as well as trained. By the end of 1994 Jim had
teamed up with Nancy Gyes and left Washington state for sunny
San Jose, California. In addition to running Power Paws Agility
with Nancy, Jim is on the board of directors of the United States
Dog Agility Association (USDAA), and on the board of the Bay
Team Agility Club. Although Jim is known for his aggressive,
run with your dog type handling, he and his dogs excel in all
the variety of agility classes, whether it be gamblers, jumpers,
snooker, or standard. His students at Power Paws know him for
his irrepressible sense of humor, making classes there entertaining
as well as informative.
His
Dogs
Mick, born 6-1-91, started showing in April of 1993 and by the
end of 1994 was competing at the Masters level of USDAA and the
Elite level of NADAC. In 1995 Jim and Mick made agility history
by becoming the first team to earn both the USDAA Agility Dog Champion
title (ADCH) and the NADAC Agility Trial Champion title (NATCH).
At the first NADAC Nationals in 1995 Mick won the National Championship
in the 24" Elite class. In 1996 Jim and Mick went on to win
the 30" class at the USDAA Grand Prix of Dog Agility National
Championships, making them the first team to win national championships
in two agility organizations. In addition to winning in 1996, they
have been Finalists at the USDAA Grand Prix of Dog Agility in 1995,
1998, 2000 and 2001. In 1996 they were chosen by the USDAA to represent
the United States at the World Dog Show in Vienna. Mick is the
only dog to make the USDAA Top Ten in all categories for seven
consecutive years, 1996-2002. In 2003 Mick became the first dog
to be awarded the USDAA’s Platinum Lifetime Achievement Award,
which requires 500 masters legs, with at least 50 in each class.
Mick retired in October 2003 as the USDAA’s all time career
Master leg earner with 550.
In
1995 Jim acquired his second Border Collie, Highcroft Swift,
a littermate to Nancy's Riot. At first, an agility career for
Swift looked doubtful, since he needed TPO surgery on both hips.
Fortunately, the surgeries and rehabilitation were a success
and Swift was up and competing by the time he was two years old.
In August of 1998 he earned his first ADCH, and in 2000 and 2001
he was a Finalist at the USDAA Grand Prix of Dog Agility World
Championships. Swift made all 4 categories in the USDAA Top Ten
for the years 2000 and 2001, making Jim the first handler to
have two dogs in all categories in the same year. In 2003 Swift
earned enough legs for the USDAA Gold Lifetime Achievement Award,
which requires 350 legs at the Master level, with at least 35
in each class.
Mick
and Swift rank #1 and #2 for career Master gamble legs in USDAA,
with 125 for Mick and 87 and counting for Swift.
In
January of 2000 Jim added his third Border Collie, Spy, aka Power
Paws Secret Agent. Spy started competing at the end of June 2001,
and qualified for the USDAA nationals at only his second trial.
At the 2001 Nationals, Spy placed 2nd in the first round of the
Steeplechase, 2nd in Gamblers, and tied for third in Jumpers.
Spy has also earned his USDAA ADCH.

Jim
and Nancy are also involved with Border Collie rescue. Here are
a few of the rescue dogs that Jim started in agility before placing.
Blast owned
by Brittney Holtorf. Blast has an ADCH in USDAA, and has Excellent
titles in AKC. Blast was the 24" Jumpers Champion at the
1996 USDAA Nationals and finished 2nd at the 2000 AKC Nationals
in the 24" class. Blast has also earned his Bronze Lifetime
Achievement Award in USDAA with over 150 career Masters legs.
Meg owned
by Ron Etherton. Meg has earned USDAA ADCH and NADAC S-NATCH.
Meg is also a NADAC National Champion.
Fly owned
by Laura Manchester. Fly has her USDAA MAD and earned her USDAA
ADCH in 2002.
Molly owned
by Holly Bourne. Molly has her USDAA MAD title and AKC Excellent
titles.
